17. Scatcherd Park
Directly adjacent to Scarth gardens lies Scatcherd Park. It was opened in 1911 on land bequeathed to Morley by Oliver Scatcherd. Morley’s War Memorial stands inside the park. It was constructed in 1927 to commemorate those who died in the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added in the late 1940s. The park has a Crown Green Bowling ground situated along Queens Promenade and then opens up to a large green space with a new performance area built with finance from the Morley Town Deal Grant of 2021. Here the final statue commissioned from Melanie Wilks is situated. Easy to recognise Ernie Wise partner of Eric Morecambe over sees the performance area. His association with Morley being his birth and early years in East Ardsley, then part of Morley County Borough council and his first public appearance as a song and dance man was at the Morley Pavilion situated at the top of Queen St.
