19. Morley Cricket Club
In 1841 Morley Cricket team, then known as Throttlers Off, played their first game on Fisher’s Field, a mere long hop from the present field. In early 1850’s now known as Morley, they moved to the Nelson ground just near the Prospect. (the Nelson is visited on walk 2) in 1862 the club moved to the current on Scatcherd Lane. In 1929 the committee of the now Morely Cricket, Bowling and Athletic Club made momentous decision to purchase the cricket field an adjoining rugby field from Lord Dartmouth at a cost of £3,000. A considerable sum considering it was just after the great depression and the general strike. Even more adventitious was the fact the money was to be raised by means of a huge bazaar, held over 1 week at Morley Town Hall. Two years in the preparation by the club members.
