4. Church of St Mary in the wood

This church, built in 1878, stands on the site of other churches which date back to medieval times. The previous Old Chapel changed to Congregational worship in 1650, at the time of Oliver Cromwell’s rule but was allowed to continue this after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. There are some finely-carved gravestones around the church, certain of which are listed for preservation. On the right hand of the churchyard is a mausoleum which contains the bodies of the Scatcherd Family.
