5. Morley Main Colliery
This long flight of steps is in close proximity to the Morley Main deep pit coal mine. The mine now long gone became famous on 7th October 1872 when a fierce underground explosion took the lives of 34 men and boys aged between 14 and 58. Eleven horses also died. Six men survived this horrendous ordeal. The series of mosaics you see as you descend the steps is a memorial to those unfortunate men and their families. The mine never reopened.
